Kadri Toom’s exhibition “Enwrapped Cities”
Kadri Toom’s graphic works and space installations reflect the fast developing areas in growing cities. These works represent the strong marketing of these city structures, enwrapped skeletons of the houses, the mystery and utopia of the city space. The artist is observing visual layers in new neighborhoods. The booming building activity makes the “faster and more” mentality visible and wants to build as packed as possible. Observing the still-life of the half-ready houses and their finishing creates the visuals, that speak of alienation, emptiness, closeness, repetitions and silence. One cannot miss the presence of power and money, the relations between strength and performance, orderliness, uniformity and calculation.
Graphic sheets are made in mixed technique, mostly using cyanotype, monotype and screen printing. 2-dimensional works bring the 3-dimensional objects back to room that speak of a visual beauty of an unfinished architecture and empty bubbliness of new developments.
Kadri Toom (born 1984) has graduated from Tartu Art College paintings department and obtained MA in graphics from Estonian Academy of Art. After her studies she has participated in several art residencies, international art projects and workshops. She has had personal exhibitions in Estonia, Latvia, Switzerland and Czech Republic. She is drawn to the subjects related to silence, emptiness and temporaryness. She is mixing different techniques and materials. Last years her works have focused on experimental graphics. Kadri Toom is a member of Estonian Artists’ Association and The Association of Estonian Printmakers.
