Intaglio printing with BIG ground is a new method for classic intaglio techniques such as etching, aquatint, photo aquatint, soft-ground etching, réservage. Prior experience is not necessary.

Big ground is the invention of Andrew Baldwin (Baldwin’s Ink Ground) and is meant for all intaglio printing techniques. Baldwin introduced his invention at Muhu Print and Lembe Ruben is continuing to popularise this revolutionary and environment friendly ground in Estonia.

BIG ground can be used to make different classic and newer techniques onto one plate at the same time.

Working with BIG ground is completely different compared to classical techniques. The biggest difference is the absence of toxic chemicals – everything is done with soy sauce, lavender oil, sugar, molasses, soda etc. The drying time of the ground is also different as it is dried in an oven. The result and convenience of the new tools is as good if not better than with the classical methods.

mbe Ruben has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts graphic arts department. She got a Master of Arts degree in fine arts. The technique of her works are graphic art, drawing, photography and painting. She obtained the Wiiralt prize for young artist in 2011 and her works can be found in state art museums of Estonia, Latvia and Denmark. She has taught graphic arts, drawing and composition at the Estonian Academy of Arts and University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy, has designed and illustrated books and magazines and has been engaged in animation and stage decoration.
