TYPA CentreEvent

In November, we will be opening the doors of TYPA’s photo studio and darkroom to enthusiasts of analogue photography. Come take part in a two-day black-and-white photography course, where we will teach you the fundamentals of traditional film photography. Learn how to adjust your camera’s aperture, ISO, and shutter speed, and create proper compositions. The course is best suited for beginner and digital photographers.

On the first day, you will be acquainted with the different parts of an analogue camera and practice taking black-and-white photographs. On the second day, you will learn how to use photographic chemicals and prepare the necessary chemical mixes as well as how to achieve the right degree of contrast and softness in photographs. After that you will get to develop your own film.

The course provides an introduction to the magic of analogue photography and gives participants a first-hand experience of the art of photography and working in a darkroom. No personal tools or prior experience required. Learners will be provided with cameras for use during the course. At the end of the course, each participant will produce a series of black-and-white photos. In addition, everyone will get to take the photographic film used for developing the photos back home with them. Learners who have completed the course will have access to TYPA’s darkroom at a discount rate.

The course is taught by experienced photographer and printer Jörgen Loot. Jörgen has used a variety of experimental techniques in his work and has acquired an in-depth knowledge of photography and photographic development processes. Jörgen specialises in traditional darkroom photography and historical development techniques, such as carbon printing. He has worked with a number of international artists, helping them bring their ideas to life through photographic development. Jörgen’s own photography predominately deals with Estonia’s natural environment.
