Workshop box includes:

• 2 pieces of linoleum
• 1 linocut knife (set)
• 1 tube of black ink
• 1 ink roller
• 1 sheet of transparent film
• 4 sheets of paper

You will also need:

• a large spoon
• paper tape (to stick down transparent film)
• a marker pen
• graphite paper (optional)

To make linocut, a design is cut into the surface of the piece of lino with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge. The parts carved will be the white in the image and the remaining, raised surface is what is printed. The linoleum sheet is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and then impressed onto paper or fabric. Printing can be done by hand or with a printing press.

The material, linoleum, was first produced in the 1860s as a floor covering. Linoleum is a lot easier material to cut than wood and is a cheaper alternative to metal printing plates. It became popular among the artists of Die Brücke in Germany and has been used by many famous artists such as Matisse and Picasso.

Once you have cut a linocut, you can make hundreds of prints,
cards and even print it onto fabric.
