About us

The two Austrian based artists Hanna Priemetzhofer and Franziska Thurner – known as »System Jaquelinde« – work in the transition of analogue and digital art. They create conceptual visualisations, videos, installations and graphics. Based on detailed observations they interweave various materials, media and techniques to create both real and virtual spaces. Since 2005 they have realised various live visualisations in Austria and abroad, their music videos got screened at diverse film festivals and they’ve presented various video and photo installations. Recently they adress more political and social topics in their work.

About our project:

As a reaction to globalisation, consumerism and suppressive systems we are interested in critical and sustainable tendencies, social uprisings and antiauthoritarian practices. We want to explore the city of Tartu by researching and portraying alternate systems and subcultural strategies.

We are interested in the individuals involved in counter-movements, so they will be the focus of our investigations and photographic portraits. The different characters will be represented by important objects of their life. These items will be arranged to display the form of a Latin letter. So the human characters will be represented by typographic characters formed out of their personal belongings … (To get an aesthetic impression of this idea look at our press picture).

In total we want to travel 8 European cities. During one stay we will visit 3–4 activists in their homes or institutional spaces to shape the alphabetic forms on-site and capture it photographically. Our aim is to finally complete 26 characters to generate a European alphabet of subversion.

As we are following an anti-elitists approach to art, the letter forms of each city will be printed on A1 posters to spread them locally and exhibit them in public space. Choosing this medium to distribute our work definitely addresses the history of posters in the real of political and social resistances. In the end of our stay in Tartu we will hold a public presentation to show the portraits we created in the city and give insights into the process of the whole project.
