Tartu Artist in Residence Open Call for the year 2019!
Artists of various disciplines will have the opportunity to work, live and find new inspiration in the scenic city of Tartu for a period of one, three or six months. The deadline for applications is 20.10.18 and the results will be announced on 20.11.18.
TAiR is a unique artist in residence program that is realized through the collaboration of Pallas University of Applied Sciences, Tartu Art Museum, Culture Factory Aparaaditehas, Tartu Arthouse and many other partner organizations who contribute different skills & resources, thereby making it possible to cater to different genres. Our main areas of competence are printmaking and visual arts, but the program is open to artists from all creative disciplines. Based on the applications from artists, we try to tailor each residency to meet the requirements of the project.
Although we mainly work with artists, we are looking forward to also hosting curators and art scholars provided that we work out a meaningful project.
Here is some information about the residencies in 2019:
In 2019, we offer four residency packages:
- A short-term residency (one month) at the end of which a public outcome is possible (open studio, workshop, artist talk, etc.).
- A long-term residency (three months) at the end of which a public outcome is expected (exhibition, performance, artist talk, etc.).
- A long- term artistic & academic residency (six months) which gives the opportunity to teach a course on a freely chosen subject at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences. The course is remunerated; the length of the course is 32 academic hours and should take place during the autumn semester of 2019. In addition, a public outcome is expected (exhibition, performace, artist talk, etc.).
- A short-term & long-term family residency (one or three months) for artists accompanied by max. 2 children and life partner. Required is a possible public outcome at the end of the residency (open studio, exhibition, workshop, artist talk, etc.).
Terms & Conditions
Financial Aspect
– Short-term 1 month residency:
- we expect a contribution of € 300
- we provide free accommodation, a production grant of up to € 50 and help you get connected to the local community. If possible and desirable, we will also work with you towards a public outcome.
- Travels, daily living costs and studio spaces are at the artist’s expense.

– Long-term 3 month residency
- we expect a contribution of € 300
- we provide free accommodation and studio space, a travel grant of up to € 400, a production grant of up to € 150 and we will help you get connected to the local community. We will also work with you to create an exhibition or other public event towards the end of the residency.
- Daily living costs and additional travel or production costs are at the artist’s expense

- Daily living costs and additional travel or production costs are at the artist’s expense
- The 32 academic-hour course is remunerated by Pallas University of Applied Sciences

Thematic Priorities
From 2019 we wish to take a more sustainable approch towards our residency program in Tartu. We would like to encourage artists to use more sustainable materials during their residency but also to take into consideration their means of travel and lifestyle. To bear in mind our concern for the environment’s well-being, we announce the theme for 2019 to be “Sustainability”. This theme also contributes to the application of Tartu to becoming the European Culture Capital 2024 under the title of “Arts of Survival“.
We would like the artists to offer in their application suggestions as to how they would address this topic either in the logistics of their residency, in the materials they use or in the subject matter of their work. We are looking forward to learning and experimenting with new ideas together with you.
