Joost Halbertsma was TYPA’s artist in residence from March-April 2026.
Joost Halbertsma (NL, 1984) is an artist, illustrator and printmaker, moving freely between zines, fine art, cartoons, illustration and design. His work is rooted in drawing personal sketchbooks, reflecting on life, the human condition and the state of the world, touching on subjects around human fragility, loss and resilience.
Halbertsma grew up loving posters, comics and record covers, attracted to the idea that art is not bound to a precious original but can move around freely in the outside world. Since 2020, he has fully incorporated relief printmaking into his practice as an artist and illustrator, working in stamps, lino and woodcuts. He is particularly interested in what the process of carving and printing does to his drawings. He will be working at TYPA as artist in residence on further relief prints throughout March and April.
In March 2025 he opened his exhibition titled “Relive Prints” which brought together five years of relief printwork by Joost Halbertsma, from the moment he first took up printmaking in Mexico to recent personal projects and illustrations. The works span wood- and linocuts, stamps and mokuhanga, and include illustrations for bands and magazines, buttons, t-shirts, as well as personal prints and series.
On Galleries Night, on the 10th of April Joost spent the entire evening giving people real-fake tattoos in his self built tattoo booth, using linocut stamps and water-based ink.
