Gillian Stewart was TYPA’s artist in residence from August-September 2025. Gillian is an award winning bookbinder from Scotland, who owns her own book binding studio named Juju Books.
She was a part of our residency program, and spent her residency working on her artist book. The personal print project involved texts casted on the Monotype machine which were later printed on the F.A.G. Standard proofing press. The artist book also included small illustrations printed with metal cliches.
On Galleries Night, the 30th of August 2025, she held a hard-cover notebook binding workshop. The binding was done using the pamphlet stitch. The workshop started at 12pm and took place with 30-minute intervals until 3pm.
On the 11th of September she also held an artist talk where she spoke about her work practises and book project, which was then followed by a brief demo of Drum Leaf binding a sewing-free binding method which allows the binder to create double-sided pages that open flat whilst only using single sided prints.
