TAiR is a unique artist in residence program in that it is realized through the collaboration of various partner organizations who contribute different skills & resources, thereby making it possible to cater to different genres. Our main areas of competence are printmaking, theater and visual arts, but we also accept curators, researchers, writers, etc. Based on the applications from artists, we tailor each residency to meet the requirements of the project.

We offer two residency packages:
⁃ A short-term residency (about one month) at the end of which a public out come is possible (open studio, workshop, artist talk, etc.). A total of 6 vacancies are available for 2016.
⁃ A long-term residency (about three months) at the end of which a public out come is expected (exhibition, performance, artist talk, etc.). A total of 4 vacancies are available for 2016.

Conditions and priorities

· Financial Aspect

– Short-term residency:
• we expect a contribution of € 300
• we provide free accommodation, a production grant of up € 50 and help you get connected to the local community. If you so wish, we will also work with you towards a public outcome.
• Travels, daily living costs and studio spaces are at the artist’s expense.

– Long-term residency
• we expect a contribution of € 300
• we provide free accommodation, a travel grant, a production grant of up to € 100 and help you get connected to the local community. We will also work with you to create an exhibition or other public event toward the end of the residency.
• Daily living costs are at the artist’s expense

· Thematic Priorities

(Note: for one-month residencies, the thematic priority is not a requirement, but an added bonus to your application)

For 2016, we are looking forward to projects connected to the theme of “Being second”. This derives from the position of the city of Tartu in Estonia — it is the second-biggest city of the nation and as such is constantly struggling to find that one thing (those things) that would allow it to overcome the physical constraints and be the best in something else. Maybe it could be the fact that Tartu hosts seven institutes of higher education or the fact that it has one of the highest number of museums per capita of any European nation. Or something else — we feel that artistic contemplation of this idea will help the city to gain a stronger identity.
