TYPA is looking for a long-term ESC volunteer to work for 10 – 12 months in our paper and print centre.

TYPA is a unique institution, dedicated to the preservation of print heritage and promotion of international cultural exchange. We are a top-rated museum, providing hands-on tours for our visitors, and as a ‘working museum’, we put all our historical print machines to good use. We are heavily involved in numerous other activities surrounding the promotion of artistic printmaking, book publishing and papermaking. Volunteers have the opportunity to work within our small team and become involved in the various tasks which surround museum life. The work is often hands-on and varied. One day you could be assisting with a linocut workshop with kids, the next could be making notebooks for our shop-corner. We have experience hosting many ESC volunteers and each one has contributed a unique aspect to our project.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

You will be living in a private room in a shared apartment. Kitchen, toilets etc will be shared. The apartment will have the usual amenities, furniture, dishes etc. You will be provided with a monthly allowance for food and living expenses. Tartu is a relatively small city, so most locations are within walking distance. Tartu is a safe, clean and green city, with a great cultural scene. You can spend your free time hiking in nature or taking part in ESN parties, in museums or gallery openings. There is also a good public bus service and a city-wide bicycle rental system. Getting around will be easy!

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

The volunteer will be provided with training in many of the techniques offered at TYPA; such as papermaking, letterpress printing, linocut, cyanotype photography, bookbinding, to name a few. You will also have the opportunity to assist with workshops, and organising cultural events. Our volunteers often have the chance to lead their own public events and collaborate with other ESC volunteers in organisations around Tartu; such as Tartu 2024, Kogo and Aparaaditehas cultural space.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

We are looking for a volunteer to start in September/ October. The volunteer will help us with our creative and heritage work: be willing to assist with the various daily tasks of museum life. We are looking for individuals with good initiative, who can lead their own projects and will be ready to get their hands dirty. Volunteers need to have a passion for creativity and culture, however, we are not necessarily looking for experienced printmakers, as we are able to provide training in these areas. We want someone who works well in a small team and they must like cats. Within these roles we are looking for the following positions:

Communications and Design Volunteer

● A natural promoter and people person

● Good with communication, social media and photography a bonus

● Ideal for a communication and design student/graduate

Collections Volunteer

● An well organised individual with a natural curiosity.

● Good communicator with strong research skills

● Ideal for a museums studies or collection management student.

Creative Art Studio and Gallery Volunteer

● A natural creative, with skills in print or other fine art mediums

● Experience with exhibition set up or an interest in curation

● Ideal for a fine art or printmaking student

APPLYING

To apply, please send a motivational letter, detailing which role you would be most suited to, why you would like to volunteer at TYPA and your motivation to becoming part of the European Solidarity Corps.
