One artist \u2013 the lovely and talented Paul Pretzer \u2013 has just left and before his seat has even turned cold a new artist \u2013 Denton Frederickson \u2013 has entered the building. I am well overdue for my first blog post!<\/p>\n<p>So \u2013 before I forget them all \u2013 here are my first impressions of Tartu.<\/p>\n<p>LOVE:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The drawers and drawers of vintage and antique letterpress (that I\u2019m determined to use at some point!) at the Tr\u00fckimuuseum<\/li>\n<li>Being allowed to ride a bicycle without a helmet (and on the footpaths!)<\/li>\n<li>The open-air market by the river, with its selection of summer berries, pickled cucumbers and eclectic merchandise<\/li>\n<li>Muhu Pagarid bakery at the Aparaaditehas \u2013 quite possibly the best rye bread I have ever tasted. The rest of the Aparaaditehas is not too shabby either.<\/li>\n<li>The Uuskasutuskeskus en route to the studio. An obligatory stop for picking up retro glassware, crockery and Soviet era postcards at prices so ridiculously cheap it\u2019s almost like they are paying you<\/li>\n<li>Wall to wall festivals in the streets<\/li>\n<li>The fact that my 1960\u2019s Soviet era flat is in the heart of the old town, next door to a thirteenth-century church.<\/li>\n<li>A whole bunch of other stuff, but I\u2019ll save those for another post.\n<p><div id=\"attachment_2531\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/typa.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1869-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2531\" class=\"wp-image-2531 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/typa.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1869-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonas and Paul playing what is quite possibly the official game of Tartu &#8211; ping pong<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>GRIPES:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone here speaks such excellent English it\u2019s nigh on impossible to learn any Estonian.<\/li>\n<li>Time is going by way too quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/typa.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1777-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox-2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2532 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/typa.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IMG_1777-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>HOT TIPS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring gumboots. Even in summer.<\/li>\n<li>Vinegar dissolves calcium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are a few snaps, to get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00dcks kord l\u00f5ika (from the Estonian saying, \u201cMeasure nine times, cut once\u201d, which gives you some indication of just how conscientious they are).<\/li>\n<li>Ove brings it to the linocut shuffle in the Paberimuuseum. Large scale printing Estonian style.
