Sabatina Leccia is a young French artist currently working in Tartu for one month with the program Tartu Artist in Resdience (TAiR http:\/\/residency.tartuensis.com\/<\/a> )<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of Sabatina’s residency is sustainability and recycling, thus she was set out to give a second life to an object destined for destruction: the plastic bag. As a symbol of consumption (and overconsumption), it embodies an utilitarian relationship with the world, and it is precicely this relationship that Sabatina wanted to question.<\/p>\n

By using embroidery as a technique on the plastic bags, Sabatina placed the obects in a different time frame, that of slow contemplation. By doing this, she brought together the ephemeral\/perishable and the eternal, creating a meeting space between the plastic and the perennial beauty. This two-way perspective is the basis for her work that invites you to daydream.<\/span><\/p>\n

The final exhibition is an aerial installation of the finished works. Some of the bags exhibited have been embroidered solely by Sabatina. Some others are the outcome of a workshop she conducted in the Print and Paper Museum, where participants used antique presses to print different verses in different languages on the bags.<\/p>\n
